Submeta provides supplemental funding for basic research.
Within the standard peer-review funding process, it is a challenge to obtain support for a project which is not based on established research. This may be appropriate for the distribution of public dollars. However, it can stifle the risk-taking attitude which is sometimes necessary in order to break new ground.
Corporate or defense funding are other options. However, these often come with significant strings attached.
Submeta is a nonprofit fund which focuses on providing smaller, supplemental grants. Our approach is to support researchers rather than specific research projects. Grants can be used to jump-start work in an unexplored corner of your field, to purchase a piece of equipment, to expand a travel budget, or for some other purpose which might be difficult to justify to a committee.
The application process is designed to be as lightweight as possible. We take a hands-on approach to learning about your research, in an informal manner. We have no desire to consume your time with paperwork.
We have a particular interest in facilitating interdisciplinary projects which may have difficulty finding a home within the classic university funding structure.
